Statement on Historic Election of Vice President-elect Kamala Harris

Rev. Harriet Bradley

Director, African American Outreach

South Region Chapter Coordinator

A hundred years after women were granted the right to vote, the first woman has been elected Vice President. Vice President-elect Kamala Harris not only represents all women, but because of her heritage, represents African-Americans and Indian-Americans as well. Harris is an example to all professional women that they can serve in the position as Vice President of the United States, with a husband and children who support and stand beside her. My high school classmate Jill Manyard-Gibner said it well: “What a blessing it is to be able to witness this historical event, not for me, but for my grandchildren and great grandchildren, both male and female! It shows them how anything is possible for those who dare to dream.” As the Director of African-American Outreach for Democrats for Life of America, I share this joy and excitement.

President-elect Biden has called for a time to heal. Let that time begin now, with the opening of dialogue between the Biden-Harris Administration and Democrats for Life of America.

I support the Vice President-elect’s desire to see adequate healthcare for all, to ensure access to a college education, and oversee an increase in the minimum wage for workers. We at Democrats for Life of America speak for the 20 million American Democrats who believe in protecting the life of the unborn. Vice President-elect Harris has an extreme pro-abortion position that is out of step with a third of the Democratic Party. Ms. Harris has said that she will be Vice President for all people. I believe I will have the opportunity to discuss with this administration the importance of finding common ground. President-elect Biden has called for a time to heal. Let that time begin now, with the opening of dialogue between the Biden-Harris Administration and Democrats for Life of America. There is so much we can accomplish together to promote the dignity of all Americans.

We are united in our support for policies that assist families who find themselves in crisis or unplanned pregnancies, and we know that the Biden-Harris Administration shares this vision, because much of it is in their platform.

The first thing I will do when our team meets with Vice President-elect Harris is emphasize the vision we share. We believe that we can reduce the number of abortions sought each day in America because we are united in our support for policies that assist families who find themselves in crisis or unplanned pregnancies, and we know that the Biden-Harris Administration shares this vision, because much of it is in their platform. Both Ms. Harris and I believe that women deserve to have a breadth of options available during pregnancy, including the support and resources needed for a successful pregnancy and subsequent adoption or parenthood, access to education, healthcare, and childcare, and appropriate child support. We envision a new day without financial or societal barriers to bringing a planned or unplanned pregnancy to term. I invite Vice President-elect Harris to meet with Democrats for Life of America. We are ready to join you in building back better.
